Day 55: Cobourg to Adolphustown (T.D.: 114.2km; S.T.: 5h53min)

My notebook for today has “BEAUTIFUL DAY!!” scrawled in big, misshapen caps. Underneath, it says “tailwind!!”. I do remember a delightful biking day, and we were once again very happy to be on the Waterfront Trail instead of dreary Highway 2. It was also a day when events beyond our control seemed to be on our side. For example, as we pulled into Colburn, rain clouds fast approaching and our stomachs rumbling, we found a lovely public gazebo in the town centre, where we were able to make a lovely brunch and stay nice and dry while the rain passed overhead. By the time we were finished our oatmeal, the rain was long gone and we were ready to rock. The only low point of the day occurred when a mean lady in a
restaurant wouldn’t let us use the washrooms, so we had to duck in some bushes behind a gas station (have I said too much? Is this incriminating somehow?)

Anyway, our ride today took us through Prince Edward County, where we lunched outside a dusty old library, and took charming country roads past farms and vineyards. We discovered that Caroline had a flat coming into Picton, but fortune made it happen right near a No Frills grocery store, so while she patched it up, I made good use of the time by picking up a few items for dinner. We also were approached by some traveling teens who informed us that we were “pretty badass” for doing what we were doing. That made us feel happy.

Highlight of the day was the Glenora ferry, which was a quick little jaunt from the peninsula back to the mainland, where we had a short ride to the Loyalist Campground of Adolphustown. This campground earns top marks, and we had a lovely stay, despite the fact that it also has the dirtiest pay phone booth in the world.

Stats:

Av. Spd.: 19.3km/h
Mx. Spd.: 46.1km/h
Marks for funny facial expressions beside "Welcome To..." signs: 7/10 (not my best, but not bad)
Dirtiest Phone Booth In the World: This one.
Irony of ironies: One of the very few times on this trip when we needed a pay phone to make a call (to my aunt and uncle in Kingston - our next stop), this was the only thing available. Caroline made me go in. It was scary!
