Day 7: Enderby to Sicamous (T.D.: 39.4km; S.T.: 2h08min)

So yeah, we decided to go easy on ourselves today. We had planned to travel 115km from Enderby to Revelstoke, but with temperatures forecast to exceed those of yesterday, we thought it prudent to avoid any unnecessary trips to the hospital. The fellow we planned to stay with in Revelstoke was most understanding when we explained our situation, and even offered to set us up at his mother’s house in Sicamous, which was conveniently located somewhere between us and him. It was an easy 40km ride through rolling farmland into Sicamous (the houseboat capital of the world!) and we were happy to be rolling our bikes into the garage of Paul and Deirdre before the afternoon heat really took hold. Our hosts proved to be very amicable, and took us for a swim in Lake Shuswap, where the houseboats floated by in droves, and then for an ice cream at Licks ‘n Splits, a fine establishment serving fine ice cream.

We capped off our “rolling rest day” (that’s what the cycle tourers call a day like this), with a barbecue and drinks in the backyard, and slept in a garage-turned-living-room – a delightful hybrid space where parking our bikes and sleeping on a pull-out couch are activities that co-exist without conflict.

Stats:
Av. Spd: 18.4km/h
Mx. Spd: 43.6km/h
Strangest sight: A hubcap collection that lined the fences, walls and roof of a tiny store somewhere near Grindrod.
Best place to while away your days in a booze-fueled haze: On a houseboat on Lake Shuswap, apparently.

  1. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the fiery furnace of hellish heat abates for you... and will no doubt have dreams of Licks and Splits!

  4. Heatwave!!! It's like a HEATWAVE!!

Vernon in mid-July is the hottest I've ever experienced in BC. Swimming in those lakes is awesome (and necessary)... glad you got to sample. If you lived in Vancouver, we could do trips to the lakes in the Okanagan every summer!!
